Petronas Towers

Visiting this Kuala Lumpur's landmark, The Petronas Twin Towers, is an integral part of the city experience. At the time of our visit, the online booking system was down so we had to revert to the old fashioned queuing but luckily we managed to secure a space for the same afternoon. (They are now, however, available to be purchased in advance.) The towers are depicted as symbol of the whole country, with its outline drawing the letter 'M' for Malaysia onto the Kuala Lumpur skyline. At 452m it remains the world's tallest twin towers and an iconic sight in the KL skyline.

Seven years in building, this glass and steel construction has been open to visitors since 1999 and it still attracts thousands of visitors daily. It is open all day and tourists are invited in small groups every 15 minutes as every visitor must fit into the two lifts taking them up to the 41st floor to first visit the skybridge. At 170m this world's highest double decker bridge offers stunning views across the city and beyond.

With my vertigo I tried to stay clear of the floor to ceiling glass windows but rest of the family enjoyed peering through the glass and spotting places we were going to visit.

Highlight of the tour is the ascent to the observation deck on the 86th floor. We chose to visit the towers at sunset, and it was wonderful to witness the change of colours in the city when the dusk started ascending onto the skyline. The equatorial sunset is often short and dramatic, and we were lucky to have clear skies for the array of colours in the sky. And as our visiting time draw to its end, we got the see the first twinkle of city lights in the darkening city.
