Swimming with the turtles

Diving around the Mabul island and adjacent dive sites offered a whole host of different marine life.
Scuba Junkies offer a varied programme depending on everyone's needs. Whilst the booking process frustrated me to no end, the organic approach to organisation meant a great flexibility at the destination. We opted for three dives a day with a break on Mabul after each one because it worked best with our daughter at the shore. But they organise also half-day and full day trips. There's plenty on offer just 10-15 minutes boat drive away.

The most amazing feeling was to swim with the turtles. They are so graceful almost flying in the water, not caring one bit of the strong currents we all battled against despite of their enormous size. I'm especially pleased that our non-diver caught a sight of one, too!

Occasionally we noticed that the Dive Masters were too bored to even notice the "normal" fish, and were in the hunt for the smallest (and, given, beautiful) nudibranchs, shrimps and crabs. There aren't any great big schools of fish around Mabul and Kapalai but there are plenty of rays, big and small, lion fish, box fish in their small families....
In the past there has been a lot of bomb fishing in the area that has destroyed some of the coral around. It is still worth visiting, even if you can't get a Sipadan pass, like us. Despite of us booking 4 months in advance, they were all sadly gone! We just have to go back.....
