Before the final climb over the mountain range, we stopped at the Hot Pouring Springs for a canopy walk, a quick bath and some local chicken and rice. We hadn't planned to swim but whilst the canopy walk is short and rickety (you can do it easily in half an hour), sweating from carrying a toddler is inevitable... And it was part of the entrance fee anyway, so we decided to take in the whole experience. I'm not sure if you would be able to spot any animals even if you arrived the first thing in the morning, but late afternoon there certainly weren't any in the jungle canopy. Probably this wasn't helped by a large group of Chinese shouting and running on the rope walkway. I was seething - surely the first rule of any forest is "no shouting"; Or is this just a Finnish thing? Still, it was a nice pit stop to break the journey.
We arrived to the smallish Langkah Syabas Beach Resort far later than intended having got stuck in the Kota Kinabalu traffic. In the hindsight probably should have chosen a different return route from Ranau. But the long sitting was rewarded with a good swim and an excellent mozzie coil lit dinner. Whilst the old chalets are in need of some TLC and a general update, the main house's verandah is tastefully decorated and has a fabulous view on the beach. The menu is great, and the wine cellar extensive. We truly enjoyed the locally made cheese with all 3 courses!
They really do make their own cheese! |
The Resort is located right on the beach, as per its name, with 2 great pools, suitable for adults and children alike so there's really something for everyone. Including a small putting green kept neat by the resident sheep. The views off the beach are definitely worth writing home about, although the snorkelling isn't. The resort offers activities off the shore but as we only stayed one night, we sadly didn't have a chance to test them. But our stay in Mabul, and the hospitality of this stay has really made me want to come back and do some diving in the KK area!
