A weekend in Miri

Miri is only 2 hours away from Bandar, significantly on the Malaysian side of the border, so many Bruneians and local expats head there for the weekend. This means a lot of swimming, sunbathing in a bikini without angering anyone, and perhaps some cheeky cocktails in the pool bar...

There is a marked difference between these two countries, in good and bad, but despite all the good, Brunei just can't compete as a tourist destination with Malaysia. A tourist can accept the Malaysian dirty toilets but not a Bruneian soulless restaurant for more than a couple of days. I'm not going to enter the debate whether we should be this conditioned to wanting a cold, crisp beverage with a seafood platter or a smooth glass with a great steak - but I think most of us are. And add some music, laughter and loud banter, and you've got a recipe for much more than you find in your average Bruneian restaurant. Hence a short drive over the border means HOLIDAY!

We normally stay in the Miri Marriott with its great facilities for adults and children alike. They've got nice children's pools, and the swim in pool bar adds a nice flavour to the weekend. And the rooms aren't bad either. This time around we tried and tested their Sunday brunch. At RM68++ it's not the cheapest of options in Malaysia but the buffet, and especially the dessert section were amazing! The brunch offers a bit of everything for a discerning customer; seafood starters, make-your-own Caesar salad, grilled fish and meats with a variety of sauces, Asian selection, and a good old roast with veg and Yorkshire pudding...! They also offer a separate kids' corner with a good choice of not-too-processed foods, including fish and home made mini burgers. And for dessert the little ones can create their own fairy cakes. The selection will keep them satisfied long enough to allow parents to enjoy their meal. Non-alcoholic drinks and coffee is included in the price so if you make your mission to sit there for 3,5 hours and try everything, I'm sure it'll be worth every ringgit. And once you've done that, the use of the pool is complimentary, just make sure not to drown as no lifeguards are in duty.
